Dennis Greaves

The Pete Feenstra Feature: DENNIS GREAVES
Sunday 25 September 2016, 20:00 (Tuesday 27 September, 21:00 repeat)

Nine Below Zero’s roots can be traced back to the punk era of 1977-78 when Dennis Greaves and Mark Feltham formed Stan’s Blues Band. The newly-named Nine Below Zero signed to A&M Records in 1980 and released their first album ‘Live At The Marquee’.

By the time of their third album, in 1982, the band were not achieving the wider success hoped for. For the rest of the decade Dennis Greaves developed his soul/pop band The Truth producing two Top 20 singles in the UK and a Top 5 R&B hit in the US. Mark Feltham, with a high reputation as a harmonica player, concentrated on session work.

Nine Below Zero reconstituted for their 10th anniversary in 1990 with a sold-out gig at London’s Town & Country Club and there followed a period of touring with the likes of Sting, Eric Clapton and Brian May.

More recently the band – now with original drummer Mickey ‘Stix’ Burkey – toured with Brian Foxton and From The Jam.

The band’s latest album ’13 Shades Of Blue’ is released in September 2016 and the line-up is now augmented by a horn section.

Founder member/guitarist Dennis Greaves chats to Pete Feenstra about the band, with tracks from the new album.

Julian Sas

The Pete Feenstra Feature: JULIAN SAS
Sunday 18 September 2016, 20:00 (Tuesday 20 September, 21:00 repeat)

In reviewing Julian Sas’ current album Pete opined: “(he) has matured enough to place greater emphasis on songs and guitar tones, over a variety of rock/blues, boogie, shuffles and slow blues. The album is underpinned by subtle dynamics that keep his essential riffing, picking and slide playing at the core of 11 tracks of masterful rock/blues.”

In this hour special, the Dutch guitarist picks some of his favourite artists/tracks as well as featuring tracks from ‘Coming Home’.

At the age of 13 he heard a Muddy Waters track for the first time. Four years later a 17-year-young Julian Sas attended a Rory Gallagher concert, that made an even more lasting impression. He decided to become a professional musician and has been on the road ever since, recording his first album in 1996 “Where Will It End!?”. Twenty years later, who knows? No time fast, that’s for sure.

Pete Feenstra and Albert Castiglia

The Pete Feenstra Feature: ALBERT CASTIGLIA
Sunday 11 September 2016, 20:00 (Tuesday 13 September, 21:00 repeat)

Albert Castiglia’s latest album is produced by Mike Zito with whom he tours in the UK in September 2016.

Born in New York, Albert made his professional debut in 1990 with Miami Blues Authority, but truly hit the international radar after Junior Wells invited the young bluesman into his solo band for several world tours. After Well’s death in 1998 Albert worked with the great Atlanta vocalist Sandra Hall.

His own solo career began with 2002’s ‘Burn’, followed up by 2006’s ‘A Stones Throw’, ‘Keepin On’ (2010) and ‘Living The Dream’ (2012). In 2014, he released ‘Solid Ground’ on Ruf Records and his latest album for the label ‘Big Dog’ appeared in May 2016.
